OLN Inc wants to take a moment to celebrate one of our valued team members, Ernesto Barcenas. Barcenas is a Marketing Team Lead in the OLN office and has been with us since July of 2018. The team lead calls Los Angeles home- born and raised. In this one-on-one conversation with Ernesto, who is an absolute pace-setter in our company, we discussed life, goals, and business.

How would your parents have described you as a kid?

“My parents would describe me as the quiet type — someone that prioritized my studies over anything else.”

Were you in any sports or extracurriculars?

“I was on a basketball team for two years when I was eight years old. I later joined the tennis team in high school and made it to the varsity team. In college, I joined the crew team and I also learned how to ski.”

How did that competitive environment help develop you?

“Playing tennis definitely brought out the competitive side in me, My coach told me that there’s no such thing as playing for fun. In the end, winning is what counts and the feeling of a winner is why we give it our all.”

Did you have any idea you would end up in this field?

“I had no idea I would end up doing what I am doing now. I saw myself in a research lab playing with rats or bacteria.”

Tell us about your college experience/

“I attended Middlebury College in Vermont and I majored in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.”

Where did you work before joining our team?

“In college, I had a couple of jobs. I worked in a child center tutoring and mentoring 5-year olds. I also worked as a Spanish tutor, and I worked in an Octopus lab.”

What is one life experience that you feel has shaped you?

“I would say leaving Los Angeles to go study in another place. I personally never saw myself moving out right after high school, but I really needed to go off on my own and travel to places I had never been to.”

What is something we might not know about you by just looking at you?

“My favorite music genre is rock. A lot of people never see me as the guy that listens to Metallica.”

How would you describe the culture of the OLN office?

“It’s a lot of fun. We work extremely hard in the field, but we also know how to relax and have fun both at weekly team get-togethers.”

What has been your best memory of the company?

“The challenges. It’s always fun to see people get super competitive and push themselves to be better than they were yesterday.”

What is something you’ve learned through your work you didn’t know before?

“I could basically write up a whole book on everything I learned with OLN Inc. The thing that stands out the most is how to take control, not just out in sales but in life. The skills one learns at OLN are applicable anywhere, both in a professional and personal setting.”

How has this career changed you as a person?

“I would say I am a happier person. A few months ago, I was super negative about anything going on in my life but a few months with OLN and I turn any situation into a fun and positive experience.”

What are your goals with the company?

“I look to help the company & client expand into a new market by the end of 2019, beginning of 2020. There is no plan B for me. I have my eyes on the prize.”

Ernesto, thank you so much for all that you bring to the team. Your constant positivity and dedication make us stronger. When he is not in the office, Ernesto can be found with his friends. “I will usually hang out with my high school, college, and work friends,” says Barcenas, “On Sundays, I spend time with my family in Los Angeles. Other than that, I read a lot of science and business articles to stay up to date.”
